Stevens Community Humane SocietyHow you can become a member/volunteer or receive news about upcoming events.
The Stevens Community Humane Society is a volunteer organization. We rely on the good will, elbow grease, and expertise of our membership. They not only nurture our animals (and the Board when necessary), they also keep us stocked with food and supplies and help us construct animal homes.
Here are our current volunteer needs:
Foster families are the backbone of the SCHS. Foster families take stray or abandoned animals into their homes. Some families serve as interim care-givers for animals who have not yet visited the vet, while others serve as long-term homes for animals waiting for adoption.
These families treat the animals as their own until they are adopted. Foster families get the advantages of pet ownership without the expense. SCHS will pay for food, veterinary care, and supplies while the animal is in foster care.
Fostering is ideal for people who want the companionship and satisfaction that comes from interacting with pets but for whom long term pet ownership is not possible. Foster homes must be inspected and other pets owned by foster families must be up-to-date on all vaccinations. Foster families should be comfortable working with SCHS Board members and the public to arrange visits with the pets.
H&H Veterinary Center in Benson, Morris Veterinary Center in Morris, Lakes Region Veterinary Center in Elbow Lake, and Glacial Ridge Veterinary Center in Glenwood have all agreed to give the SCHS discounts on medical care. We need volunteer drivers who are willing to pick up animals from foster homes, take them to veterinary appointments, and return them to the home. We also need “on-call” drivers for emergency situations, such as animals hit by cars. Volunteers can be involved for as many or as few hours as they have available, but must use their own vehicles and have some availability during business hours.
Volunteers are needed to cut up old bedspreads, robes, etc. to create bedding for animals and liners for animal carriers. Volunteers need to have their own sewing machine.
Please contact us at 320-589-0378 or e-mail us at stevenshumane@yahoo.com if you would like to help!
Donations are always welcome and needed for the care of the animals and daily operations. SCHS is always in need of gently used carriers, kennels, cages, food dishes, and dog/cat food and litter. See our Wish List for our current needs.
