SCHS Attachment to Adoption Form
Outdoor Cats
Thank you for giving an outdoor cat a home! Depending on the cat you are adopting, some special adjustments may need to be made.
All Out door cats must be provided with food and water everyday. A cat that is fed, will still hunt. It is their instinct. In the winter, the cat should have access to an electric, heated water bowl.
All outdoor cats must be provided with shelter. It is important that a cat always have access to it’s “home”. A barn or garage might need a small “kitty door” cut into the bottom of the door or wall to ensure that the cat does not get locked out. The cat must also be provided with bedding, commonly straw. This should to be changed periodically.
Cats are easily frightened. To ensure that your new pet does not run away, it should be securely shut up in it’s barn or building for a period of time after adoption. For some cats this might be as short as two days. Others who are not as tame will require a longer lock in period, perhaps as long as two weeks. Make sure the building is kitty proof so the cat does not escape. In the summer it might be necessary to take out the glass windows and put up chicken wire over the hole so the cat does not get too hot. It will also need a pan of cat litter during this time. Don’t forget to visit the cat while it is locked up.
When you let the cat out of the building, make sure it can get back in.
It is vitally important that outdoor cats be spayed or neutered. Females can be spayed at 6 months of age. Males can be neutered at six months or younger.
Outdoor cats should be wormed twice a year. They should also be treated for ear mites twice a year, or as needed.
